Transport in New Zealand
Car Hire is available from all Tourist terminals or the airport.
You will find everything you need to know about getting around Auckland on public buses, trains and ferries from the official MAXX website, an extract below:
Use the MAXX Journey Planner to make every trip easy. All you need to do is select your departure and destination locations and when you wish to travel. The Journey Planner will advise what routes are available, and provide times, fares and maps for your trips.
The most common ticket types are listed below, including five special integrated passes accepted by multiple transport operators:
Single trip cash fare
This ticket is best if you are making a single journey. If you make this journey most days, the options below will be more cost effective.
10 ride
This ticket offers you multiple trips at a discount for a set number of stages. If you make the same trip frequently, it will be cheaper for you to buy a 10 ride ticket rather than single trip cash fares.
Monthly pass
Monthly passes enable unlimited travel on services provided by a specific operator over a one month period based on regional areas or zones. If you are a regular traveller, monthly passes are a convenient and good value way to travel.
Stored value card
Most bus operators offer stored value or smart cards. These cards allow you to load a bulk amount of money on them that is then deducted each time you make a trip. This saves you the hassle of carrying cash and you will also receive a discount off the single trip cash fare.
Integrated passes
If you need to travel on more than one mode of transport to get to your destination, for example bus and train, an integrated pass may be more cost effective. This will save you buying tickets or passes from more than one operator. Some operators also offer group passes, day passes and other ticket types.
Auckland Discovery Day Pass
A one day pass valid across a range of bus, train and ferry services
Northern Pass
A transferable pass that can be purchased for a variety of different time periods, for use on buses around the North Shore, to and from the North Shore to the Auckland CBD, and on selected train services
Monthly Discovery Pass
A pass valid for an entire month and accepted by a variety of operators across the Auckland area
Devonport Bayswater Pass
A 7-day pass to get you from Belmont, Devonport or Bayswater areas to the CBD and beyond!
Green Bay 7 Day Ticket
A route-specific 7-day pass valid on Urban Express and Stagecoach operators
Northern Flyer
One ticket to get you direct to Auckland Airport from the North Shore. FOR USE ON THE NORTHERN EXPRESS AND AIRBUS ONLY
If you are not sure which ticket or pass would be best for you, call MAXX +64(09)3666400, ask the driver or on-board staff, or contact the service operator directly.
