Medical Assistance: Injury in New Zealand
Accident Compensation Corporation ("ACC")
ACC is like an insurance policy which automatically covers everyone, including visitors, who's injured in an accident while they're in New Zealand.
The ACC support is available to all visitors and residents who are:
- Injured while in New Zealand, no matter where you were or what you were doing at the time (sightseeing, driving, hiking, or just making a cup of tea in your hotel room)
- In certain circumstances suffering a health problem related to working in New Zealand
- Injured from medical treatment in this country
- the cause or the victim of the accident ie. whether it was something you did or someone else's action that contributed to your injury
- a student or a retired individual, it is not age specific.
How do I contact the ACC?
- Your GP can assist you in applying for an ACC claim
- Website: www.acc.co.nz
- NZ Contact Number: 0800 101 996 (Monday - Friday from 8.30am to 5pm)
Most of the costs associated with treating your injury will be covered by ACC, including ambulance services and a good part of the cost of your doctor, physio, hospital treatment, surgery, X-rays and prescriptions.
What the ACC does not cover?
- The ACC is not a replacement for travel insurance.
- It doesn't cover things like disrupted travel plans and lost deposits, assisted or emergency travel home or travel for a relative.
- ACC also doesn't cover illness which good travel insurance would cover.
